LAN Manager Meeting - February 23, 2005

Register for the February meeting using ODIE. If you do not have an account on ODIE request one here. Request ODIE account.

  • 8:30 - 12:00 General Session (Conference Room B)

    • ESU Administrative/Network Issues
      • National Education Technology Plan - Graci

      • Router Maintenance & Contracts
        • Ron discussed router maintenance and it's cost effectiveness.
        • LAN Managers were asked to let Ron know if they currently have maintenance on their routers and who the provider is.
        • Ron will be available to assist LAN Managers with software upgrades/patches/access lists and increased security measures.

      • Scheduled Outage - Ron
        • There will be a scheduled outage on Saturday February 26th at 12:00 noon for some Network Nebraska upgrades.  The outage is only expected to last for approximately 15 minutes.

      • E-Rate Updates - Alan/Sue
        • All erate forms should be filed as the deadline was February 18th
        • Discussed the erate site visits.  The above link will take you to the website explaining site visits, the process and what documentation will be needed for these visits.
        • Sue requested that all schools send a list of the FCC Registration numbers to her so that she has them for her documentation.

    • Security
      • Proxy Issues - Brett
        • We are aware of the problem with the Symantec license and are working to find a solution.
        • We are looking into new solutions for filtering. The basic capabilities will be the same as we have with SWS.  We are looking at products that have the options for our own device and custom controls.
        • We may have the option with one product to put devices in schools and we are looking for schools that would be interested in using these devices on a trial basis.

      • Server Updates - Jordan/Jamie
        • Jamie and Jordan reported that we are working on redundancy in our network to eliminate down time for schools and users.
        • Jamie and Jordan will be updating the ftp server on Thursday, Feb. 24th.  For details on what this update will entail go to the following link: http://nis.esu10.org/

      • Virus Updates - Brett

      • MII - Graci
        • MII is now requesting presentations.  For more information go to the MII website at: http://mii.lps.org/

      • Internet Safety Month - Graci
        • April will be proclaimed Internet Safety Month.  A variety of activities are being planned including workshops, news conferences, presentations by Attorney General Jon Bruning and the Internet Safety Poster Contest.  State winners of the conference will be displayed at NETA.  Details of the poster contest can be found by clicking on the link below.

      • TECHS Survey & Update - Jason
        • If there are any schools interested in the TECHS (Technology Education Challenges in High Schools) program there is more information available at the following link:  http://manila.esu10.org:8000/gems/nis/techs.pdfAll schools are encourged to fill out the online survey by clicking on the TECHS Survey above.  We would appreciate any and all input into this program.

      • NCLB Solutions Showcase - March 9th - Graci
        • A one day NCLB Curriculum Showcase session with curriculum solutions aimed at NCLB requirements will be held at ESU 10 on March 9th.  These sessions are free to Nebraska education attendees and will include demonstrations by vendorsof curriculum product for Reading/Language Arts; Mathematics; and Science.  For more information click on the NCLB Solutions Showcase above.

        • Jason did a short demo of some of the features of myElearning.

    • Software
      • AVG Software - Sophos Antivirus
        • Reminder to all schools that AVG virus software is only for home computer use and is not meant to be a solution for schools.  Schools who need virus protection can purchase Sophos Antivirus at the link above.

      • Manila Updates & Manila Grants - Jason/Graci
        • Manila workshops for the coming year will be focusing on more advance topic and geared toward mult-media
        • Due to the high demand on the Manil server accounts are being moved to a new, larger server to help balance the loads.
        • Jason requested that if there are teachers out there that are not using their manila accounts get a list to hims so that he can start cleaning out unused accounts.

      • Pathfinders Powerpoint

      • 3-D Weather Globe - Marc

      • AIMS Video Update - Brett/Alan
        • Brett announced that as of June 30th AIMS Video will not exist.  Teachers need to be informed that all videos that have been downloaded need to be deleted or destroyed by June 2005

      • ODIE Updates - Nate
        • Brian demonstrated some of the new boolean search features in ODIE
        • LAN Managers were reminded that they do have the capability of changing ODIE user passwords.

      • Paint.net / Picasa - Nate & Jason
        • These programs are new and very similar to some of the photo imaging programs. They are available online as free downloads.
